General Approach to Learning: Play-Based

From the Director:

Primrose Balanced Learning® curriculum, launched in 2001 and built upon the original school model, blends the two leading philosophies of teaching young children—the child-initiated approach and the teacher-directed approach—and balances this with character development and play. The Primrose character development program teaches children the importance of helping others and being involved in the local community. The academic, character development and play elements are carefully structured into the day, in all Primrose schools, in age-appropriate ways for every grade level. Primrose serves children from 6 weeks to 5 years old in its child care program, and up to age 12 in its after-school program.

A Typical Day

Daily Adventure in Learning and Fun!
Each day, teachers plan guided activities for the children to learn through art projects, blocks, toys, and dramatic play. Children learn to cooperate as a group by participating in Circle Time, Rhythm & Notes (Music), Thumbs Up! (Physical Fitness), and Og’s Story Time, using the Primrose Literature Kit for Early Preschool. Small group sessions provide time for teacher-facilitated art and science activities.

Primrose Friends come alive in the Early Preschool classroom, inviting children to develop a keen interest in exploring the world around them. Benjamin the Bear and his weather chart provide opportunities for children to talk about the weather and learn to match, predict, and plan. Peanut’s Picture Cards introduce the children to new vocabulary, and Og builds emergent reading skills with his books full of rhythm and rhyme. The Primrose Friends Puppets accompany the children on adventure in reading, singing, dancing, counting, caring, and sharing.

Encouraging Individual Growth and Development
Young children mature and develop skills at different rates. With this in mind, Primrose Early Preschool teachers focus on each child’s progress throughout the year. They support the development of key milestones, such as exploring a book during learning center time, building with blocks, or verbally labeling basic colors. Each child is given the opportunity to develop at his or her own pace in a setting that is challenging and enjoyable. This is critical to building children’s overall sense of self-worth and competence.
