Philosophy & Approach

School Philosophy

From the Director:

Each child is both respected and challenged. We believe that learning proceeds from wonder: that the most engaging lessons arise out of the childrenâ??s own questions, interests and experiences; that hands-on projects yield memorable learning; that academic lessons ideally comprise many disciplines; and that school daysâ??for all of usâ??should be fun.

Curriculum & Teaching Approach

From the Director:

Reading and writing are emphasized, with daily workshops at all grade levels modeled on the highly regarded Reading and Writing Project of Teachers College, Columbia University. We use the Chicago Math curriculum through which children become keenly motivated to discover practical solutions to problems, advancing in reasoning and analysis to become real mathematical thinkers. Science and social studies are inquiry-based, hands-on, collaborative, and full of exhuberant interest. Art, music, Spanish, technology, music, physical education, play and service: all are woven throughout the Lower School program and thoroughly integrated into the curriculum. We take field trips, and Westtownâ??s glorious campus is one of our best teaching tools, offering opportunities to explore everything from a frog pond to historic archives.

Day in the Life

General School Mission

Westtown School is a Quaker, co-educational, day and boarding school founded in 1799. Located in Chester County, Pennsylvania, the school serves eight hundred students in prekindergarten through twelfth grades. Westtown School challenges its students to realize their individual gifts while learning and living together in a diverse community. Westtown inspires and prepares its graduates to be stewards and leaders of a better world. At Westtown, we believe a good education makes you think of four essential things: Who I am, how I see the world, how I want to live and what I can give back: Everything that matters most.

A Typical Day

A day in preKindergarten could offer a trip to our frog pond, a visit to the Star Lab, learning about dinosaurs or studying Mexico, making masks in art class, listening to stories, reading from the Big Books, learning how to be a good friend and citizen...and so much more. The school day is busy and fun!
