General School Mission

"The mission of Friends School Haverford is to foster a lifelong love of learning, grounded in an appreciation of that of God in everyone. We provide a learning environment that challenges and stimulates our students to achieve their full potential. We strive to be a diverse school family practicing the Quaker values of integrity, equality, service, community, simplicity, and peaceful problem solving.
As a child-centered school, we seek to create an atmosphere within which children learn to work independently and in cooperation with others. We challenge our students to question, explore, reflect, reason, and communicate effectively. We strive to empower them with knowledge, hope, confidence, and the ability to make thoughtful choices. We want our students, as contributing members of the community, to grow and change with flexibility and courage and to treat others with care and understanding.
Our program is rooted in our traditions of academic learning, child development, intellectual growth, artistic expression, and service to others. We encourage children’s curiosity, creativity, and joy of discovery as they grow intellectually, spiritually, physically, and emotionally.
Friends School Haverford was founded in 1885 as a coeducational Quaker elementary school and remains under the care of Haverford Monthly Meeting. We serve students entering preschool through grade six. We intentionally create a school community, characterized by diversity in belief, ethnicity, and socioeconomic background. We encourage students of all religious and humanistic traditions to listen inwardly and learn to recognize that of God in themselves and others. These shared values are reflected in the daily life of our community and in Meeting for Worship.
