General Approach to Learning: Waldorf

Day in the Life

General School Mission

"The mission of Portland Waldorf School is to work out of the insights of Rudolf Steiner to educate children for the whole of life. The school nurtures the imagination, cultivates the intellect, and recognizes the spirit of each child. In this way, children are strengthened individually and socially to meet the challenges of life."

A Typical Day

"Circle time, Songs, gestures, finger plays and games
Inside play, Children express their own creativity through undirected interaction with their peers. As the adults go about their work, the children may choose to help them with ironing, cleaning, sewing, festival preparation or cooking.
Story time, Teachers tell fairy tales or sequential stories on successive days, then retell as a puppet show, or as a play with simple costumes acted out by the children with the teacher narrating.
Outside play, Larger, more active movements that help the children become strong and well-coordinated as they expand their creative life in the world of nature.
Snack and lunch Brought from home or cooked in the room."
