Philosophy & Approach

Day in the Life

General School Mission

"In each division the curriculum is presented at a level appropriate to the age of the students, and the sequence of courses is structured so that the learner is increasingly responsible for her own learning, for managing responsibilities, and for making choices.
Hathaway Brown School strives to create an atmosphere of caring: care for individual differences, care for personal and moral development, and care for precision and high standards. The ultimate goal of the faculty is to teach their students not what to think, but how to learn. Instructors, therefore, teach broad basic skills so that students may learn to think interpretively and critically.
The school values its diverse student body reflective of the pluralism of our American culture. In addition to providing the strongest possible academic training, Hathaway Brown remains dedicated to helping young women achieve the abilities and personal qualities that will prepare them for a rewarding and productive life: confidence, independence of thought and actions, curiosity and vision, social conscience, and the acceptance of challenge.
I look forward to the coming year as one of great personal growth and
intellectual excitement for your child."

A Typical Day

"A typical Early Childhood day at Hathaway Brown School includes
the following activities:
• Arrival and free play
• Group time
• Learning Center activities
• Special subjects (music and movement, library, Spanish, or gym)
• Snack
• Story time
• Outdoor or Large Muscle Room play
• Rest period (for those children who stay for Extended Afternoons)
A blanket and a pillow are welcome for rest time. Our storage
is limited, so please send in only small items.
• Dismissal
A book bag will be needed daily, large enough to hold papers
and projects that will be sent home, as well as extra clothing.
Open totes are preferable--HB tote bags are available at our
Brown Bag store.
We ask that you not allow your child to bring toys from home. Conflicts
often arise over sharing special possessions, and children are distracted from
investing in the classroom materials and activities set up by the teachers."
