Philosophy & Approach

School Philosophy

General Approach to Learning: Teacher-Led

From the Director:

We intersperse teacher-led instruction with play time for the children.

Quality of Teaching

Individualized Teaching: From the Director

We have an excellent teacher-student ratio which allows us to work in small groups with children who are either behind or excelling.

Day in the Life

General School Mission

We believe children learn through play. Play is their work. However, we do recognize that more and more is being asked of children entering kindergarten, so we do provide more formal/structured lessons as well.

A Typical Day

We start with group time which focuses on our educational theme of the week. Our 4s and Pre-K students take turns doing jobs such as helping with attendance, weather report, calendar, etc. After group time is free time where we also work on crafts and/or seatwork/worksheets. Then we wash-up for snack time. Afterf snack, we have physical education or our music education class. We end with story time.

Home-School Connection

Home-School Connection: From the Director

We have a Parent Open House to start the year. We provide monthly newsletters and calendars that detail the upcoming topics in school and events. Parents are invited to spend the day with their child at school on the child's birthday/special day, can volunteer within the classroom, and are always welcome to visit. We schedule parent-teacher conferences in January and have an All-School Open House where children peform and artwork is displayed in the Spring.

Parents Say They are Encouraged to:

  • Sit on the board of trustees
  • Hold social events at the school to build community
  • Fundraise
  • Are required to make donations ourselves
  • Are able to visit the school anytime we want
  • Go on field trips
  • Volunteer in the classroom
  • Receive newsletters

Modes of Communication

  • Notes
  • Phone Calls
  • Voice Mail
  • Special Meetings
  • Two or More Regular Conferences
  • Drop-Off
  • Pick-Up
  • Regular newsletter/printed updates circulated to the whole school

Separation

Separation is Handled through:

  • Home visits by teachers
  • Pre-entry meetings with parents at school
  • Abbreviated schedule at start of school year

Handling Separation: From the Director

We have a Parent-Child Open House where the parents and children spend a 1/2 hour at the school to become familiar with it. Then we begin our staggered entrances which involve smaller groups of students coming in for a shorter time period. We also do home visits for the 3s program. Children with needing more help with separation are worked with on an individual basis in concert with their parents.
