Philosophy & Approach

School Philosophy

From the Director:

Our enriched curriculum combines language and literacy development, math concepts, hands-on science activities, cultural awareness, creative arts and outdoor and indoor play. Our staff includes two full-time music teachers, a foreign language specialist, a physical education teacher and a computer specialist. The program is carefully balanced between teacher-directed and child-centered activities. School days include a comfortable mix of structure and play, with daily projects, snacks, stories and circle times, and activities that introduce children to basic science, language and math concepts.

Quality of Teaching

Individualized Teaching: From the Director

With an average tenure of more than 15 years, Mohawk Country Day School’s warm, skilled and dedicated teachers have touched the lives of countless Westchester families. Highly-qualified Head and Associate Teachers are chosen for their professional experience and gentle manner. Our classroom teachers are joined by a wonderful staff of specialists in music, physical education, computers and foreign language. Many of our teachers also join our summer camp program as Head Counselors or Program Specialists for our youngest campers.

Day in the Life

General School Mission

For more than 80 years, the Mohawk Country Day School (formerly Mohawk Country Home School) has been teaching children ages two years, nine months through six, providing experiences that help them learn and grow.

We are committed to fulfilling each child's needs with age-appropriate programs that carefully balance teacher-directed and child-initiated activities. With an enriched curriculum and highly skilled staff, children at Mohawk develop socially, physically, creatively and intellectually in a warm, nurturing environment.

A Typical Day

Daily music with our two full-time music teachers, three playgrounds including a multi-story climbing structure, working year-round farm with hayrides, apple orchards for apple picking, grape arbor for jelly-making, and maple trees for tapping!
