"We believe that a child who feels good about himself or herself is ready to try anything. Our program uses a positive approach at all times. Activities are introduced that are developmentally appropriate so that success is probable. Because our school is a parent co-operative, the children are exposed to a large variety of adults, thus enabling them to adjust to new situations. This helps them to adapt more easily to the larger public school environment.
At the Plainview Nursery School, the expectations we hold for children are realistic ones, based on the combined thinking of the leaders in the field of child development. Our program is a happy combination of indoor and outdoor activities, quiet and livelier times, individual and group experiences. Classroom projects are skill and fun-oriented and are completed by the children. We have no masterpieces at our co-op. The children's work is respected. We do not model. We do not interject adult conceptions into creative expression. We open a child's eyes to the world of nature, language and music. We feel that we can help a child grow socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually.
Our teachers do not use sarcasm or odious comparisons. Voices are raised in song and pleasure, not harshness. We see the ways in which we are like others and how we are unique. The most wonderful part of nursery school is the opportunity to learn how to socialize with one's peers in an atmosphere that provides both acceptance and limits, so essential to a young child's development."
