Day in the Life

General School Mission

"St. James Pre-K Nursery School, established in 1974, is a non-denominational Christian school sponsored by St. James United Methodist Church. Classes for children three and four years old provide educational training and group experience preparing them to enter kindergarten. This is a community service open to all families. The goals of the school are to provide the kind of environment and varied experiences that will allow a child to make a successful adjustment to life outside the home, learn to get along with other children, become familiar with a group setting, develop an interest and joy in learning, develop self-expression, self-control, creativity and responsibility. Our most important goal is to provide these experiences in a Christian atmosphere as in
accordance with the scripture, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6"

A Typical Day

"Calendar Time- The children sing an opening song, choose things to thank God for, and have an opening prayer. They mark the calendar with the correct day and month and children take turns giving the weather report.
Whole Group Focused Learning Time- We work on various themes throughout the year. Some examples are: colors, shapes, seasons, numbers, letters, sequencing, the senses and other kindergarten readiness skills.
Story Time- The children hear a wide variety of stories as well as learning finger plays, poems, and Bible verses.
Playtime and Small Group Instruction- During this hour the children choose activities and toys to play with under the guidance and supervision of teachers. Crafts in small groups and one-on-one learning activities also occur during this hour. At the end of playtime all the children participate in cleaning up and putting toys away.
Music- The children sing songs, play rhythm instruments, and play musical games.
Show and Tell (once a week) or Gym- Children bring a favorite toy, book or other item to show to the class. In the church hall, the children develop large motor skills in a variety of fun activities.
Snack Time- Each child is responsible for bringing a healthy snack . The child's snack day is their special day when they are the class leader, marking the calendar, being the weather reporter and wearing a special sticker.
We take several field trips throughout the year which include the pumpkin farm, the aquarium, the fire station and Pages for a year-end picnic."
