5STAR merfab21-Replied on Tue.07/21/2015-301PM My husband and I have been parents of the Pinafore Nursery School for over six months now and are so happy we found such a loving school for our daughter (now 2). Dennis and Thelma are very warm and welcoming and address concerns swiftly with the utmost care. Within a couple of months our daughter learned her colors and shapes and was counting to 10! We were really impressed. My biggest concern was that she wouldn't get the love and attention at a full-time school that I give her at home. To my relief, she is very loved by her teachers (they adore her!) as they tend her to emotional needs as I would. Overall, we feel very lucky to have found the Pinafore Nursery. 5Star merfab21-Replied on Tue.07/21/2015-301PM Our son transitioned from being cared for at home full time to attending Pinafore full time when he was 21 months old. The amazing and loving teachers at Pinafore as well as Dennis and Thelma did a fantastic job helping him assimilate. He now loves going to school in the morning, seeing all his friends and also adores his teachers. In fact he's often sad on the weekends when we tell him that there's no school that day! As parents it's really rewarding to watch him learn SO MUCH. Asides from that my favorite thing about Pinafore is how he gets to go outside every day when the weather is nice, e.g. to the park or the zoo. I feel like it really adds to the stimulating environment he gets at the school. We are very lucky to be able to send him to Pinafore Nursery School. Neman08-27-15 Review added by Marina and Robert August 1st. 2014 Thank you so much for all the wonderful days Eddie has spent in the Pinafore. We have been so lucky to have you help him grow and thrive. Thank you for your warmth, your wisdom and above all your flexibility and understanding. We will all miss you very much! We wish you all the very best in the future and most definitely hope to stay in touch in the future. Warmest Regards, Marina and Robert Parents review added: June 2013 As a parent, there is nothing more important than knowing that your child (or children) are in a safe, secure, nurturing and loving environment each day. If they are not with you personally then Pinafore is a wonderful and reliable nursery school where I know my son is not only being taken care of but being treated as if he were one of their own. Literally from the very first day my now 2-1/2 year old son started at Pinafore, he was happy and excited to go to school. As soon as he arrives he feels comfortable and cared for. When I go to collect him at the end of the day, he is always in the middle of doing something that is creative, fun, interesting or engaging. He often does not want to leave! While the school is divided into two sections (by the age of the children), the teachers are there for all the kids and the children interact and play with each other accordingly. I like Pinafore because of both its ability to allow my son a certain amount of independence while creating an atmosphere of direction and discipline through play, projects, outings to the park and zoo, music, dance and yoga time, reading and quiet/nap time. My main concern is that he is safe and having fun and learning without feeling burdened or overwhelmed and I feel that he gets all that at Pinafore. He could recognize letters and numbers after a month there and he was not even two years old yet! The teachers have so much energy (bless them for being able to keep up with twenty 2 to 5 year olds everyday!!) and they genuinely love and adore the kids. Like some parents, I ask the teachers to babysit because I trust and like them so much. They know my son and he knows and cherishes them. I love the fact that the place feels like one big family and that Thelma and Dennis are so easily available and helpful. The school feels genuine and true, no pretensions, no competitions, no petty rivalries, and my son gets to be a kid rather than a little blueprint for some adult agenda. Pinafore feels like it is really there for your child and what more could I want than a place where my son is sincerely welcome with open arms. MG MGCON The Pinafore Nursery school is fantastic. My son attends school full time and had a tough time transitioning from nanny to school setting. The teachers could not have been more patient and supportive. He loves going to school, does fantastic projects that he is proud of, the kids are great and most important my son is happy and learning. I feel that the school is our extended family. Quality of Teaching

Individualized Teaching: From the Director

BACKGROUND OF OWNER, THELMA LOUISE STORCH

Beginning 1969 - Thelma Storch opened The Pinafore School in the Shelton/Huntington area of Connecticut. The school opened half-day as well as full-day programs and was licensed to accommodate 55 children. From the outset, the school was filled to capacity, and the following year expanded to 80 children. 1974 - Thelma established a child research project at The Pinafore Nursery School. The research was conducted by Dr. Jerome Singer, director of the Yale University Child Study Center in New Haven, Connecticut. The project was run in conjunction with the children’s educational TV programs, Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood and Sesame Street.

Due to the enormous demand for the services and programs offered at The Children’s Learning Center and The Pinafore Nursery School, Thelma leased an empty parochial school, which enabled her to accommodate an additional 150 children. She also developed plans for a large learning center on a four-acre parcel of land, which was to be used by the Yale Child Study Center for research projects on child education and development. Thelma then added a kindergarten class to The Pinafore Nursery School and personally taught that class in its first year, and developed an innovative program based on reading, science, elementary arithmetic, vocabulary and languages.

1997- Thelma Storch owned and operated the renewal of The Pinafore Nursery School at 356 East 74th Street NY, NY. 10065 with continuing success for 7 years but eventually rent increase took its toll and the school closed. The Pinafore Nursery School then moved to 808 Lexington Avenue NEW YORK, NY 10065 (63rd. & Lexington Ave, 1 block from its current location), for a successful and wonderful 11 years. Unfortunately the building was sold in 2015.

2015 to Present - Thelma Storch, with 40 years of experience is the owner and director of The Pinafore Nursery School at its’ new location 154 East 64th. Street 3rd. floor NY, NY.10065. Thelma and Dennis Storch, a decorated Viet Nam veteran and subsequent L.A.P.D. background is co-owner and administrator, maintain an overriding interest in children’s education and welcome the opportunity to have another nursery school/day care center here in New York City. Thelma and Dennis are totally dedicated and committed to this educational enterprise and are very enthusiastic about providing a service directed at securing the future well being of our children.

Day in the Life

General School Mission

Early aesthetic sensitivity and cognitive skills are stimulated through games involving the use of colors, textures, shapes, practical counting, hands-on computer techniques, letter and name recognition. The children learn about family, community and basic elements of nature that inhabit the world around them. The program also introduces the children to alternative forms of expression, such as creative movement through dance, theatre music and songs. The school offers a safe and well equipped environment with beautiful playrooms.

A Typical Day

THE BEST!!!

Thelma and Dennis run a phenomenal program for kids. My wife and I were a little hesitant to leave our pride and joy in the hands of others, but they made it super easy for us. The love they have for the children at the school can be felt the minute you walk through the door.
The staff is also top notch. Aneta, Anie, and Mariana are all great. They care for the children as though they are their own. Our son has learned so much and has become so much more self-confident. It's been a pleasure watching him grow at Pinafore.
Our son fell in love with Pinafore right away. He's there from 8AM to 6PM Monday through Friday, and at the end of the day, we have to drag him out of there. He has a lot of fun with the other children and never wants to leave.
We couldn't be happier with Pinafore, and we would highly recommend the school to others. Daniel C.
