Day in the Life

General School Mission

The program at Bellevue South is eclectic, combining contemporary and traditional techniques. Here a child is given the freedom to develop at his own speed in a supportive, non-competitive and nurturing atmosphere which emphasizes learning through play. In formal teaching takes place as a child expresses interest in particular subjects. Our principle objective is to provide abundant opportunities which stimulate creativity, initiative, appreciation of beauty, excitement in learning and enjoyment in social activity.

A Typical Day

Children have free play where they are encouraged to select materials and activities from the structure created by the teachers within the environment.

Home-School Connection

Home-School Connection: From the Director

We have a curriculum meeting, and two parent conferences per year. Additionally, we have a parent-of-the-day program allowing parents to spend one session a month in the classroom with their child. We give out a monthly curriculum letter to the parents so they are informed of what we are doing each month.

Parents Say They are Encouraged to:

  • Sit on the board of trustees
  • Hold social events at the school to build community
  • Fundraise
  • Are required to make donations ourselves
  • Are able to visit the school anytime we want
  • Go on field trips
  • Volunteer in the classroom
  • Receive newsletters

Modes of Communication

  • Notes
  • Phone Calls
  • Email
  • Special Meetings
  • Two or More Regular Conferences
  • Drop-Off
  • Pick-Up
  • Regular newsletter/printed updates circulated to the whole school

Separation is Handled through:

  • Home visits by teachers
  • Pre-entry meetings with parents at school
  • Small group sessions
  • Parents in classroom early on
  • Abbreviated schedule at start of school year

Handling Separation: From the Director

We have a phase-in program which includes a home visit, meeting in small group for a short time and building gradually to full time-full group. Parents or caregivers are welcome to stay in the room as long as necessary for their individual child.
