Philosophy & Approach

School Philosophy

General Approach to Learning: Play-Based

Day in the Life

General School Mission

Our Philosophy Children learn by doing. Toddlers are insatiably curious. Our job is to provide opportunities for children to try new things in a supportive, respectful atmosphere. Whether it be stacking one block on top of another, or drumming to a rhythm, or using their 'words' to resolve conflict, we feel that each and every one of these moments is a developmental milestone. We help the children to work and achieve their developmental goals through various activities including music, art, cooking, gardening and imaginary play - providing rich opportunities for them to explore the world around them.

Home-School Connection

Home-School Connection: From the Director

At the beginning of the school year parents are encouraged to attend the potluck dinner where they can meet other parents, children and the teachers. There are parent/teacher meetings. At the end of the day the teachers update the parents on the child's day as part of the routine, to communicate and connect with parents. This is not applicable

Parents Say They are Encouraged to:

  • Hold social events at the school to build community
  • Fundraise
  • Are able to visit the school anytime we want
  • Volunteer in the classroom

Modes of Communication

  • Notes
  • Phone Calls
  • Voice Mail
  • Email
  • Special Meetings
  • Drop-Off
  • Pick-Up

Separation is Handled through:

  • Parents in classroom early on
  • Abbreviated schedule at start of school year

Handling Separation: From the Director

We do a phase-in process. On the first day parent and child spends two hours with us. On the second day parent and child spends one hour, leaving the child with us for an additional hour. At this time we assess the child. We discuss our observations with parents upon their return. Depending on this, the parents would be told what the length of stay should be for the third day/next visit.
