Philosophy & Approach

Day in the Life

General School Mission

"Our younger classes are introduced to a school setting
as they learn to separate from their parents.
The main focus is social interaction as
children learn to communicate and cooperate with
peers. Our young
preschoolers learn how to work in a group, follow directions,
wait their turn and communicate their
needs. As they learn about themselves and their
peers, we work to reinforce colors, numbers and
shapes. We also work to help children visually recognize their name. Our
activities offer them ample time to learn through play, as they practice
writing, tracing, cutting, gluing and painting. Each day is a new adventure
full of music, movement, art, discovery and fun!
Our older children continue to work on their social and emotional
development as they grow. They advance their fine motor skills as they
continue to practice tracing, cutting, painting, gluing and writing. Their
cognitive skills will be challenged as they develop and increase their
readiness skills. Letter recognition will be incorporated in all we do, as we
prepare for kindergarten. This work will revolve around good children's
literature and seasonal themes. The children will also work to learn their
address and phone number as the year progresses. Learning is always hands
on, as preschoolers learn best by doing. We utilize all of their senses to
make learning meaningful and memorable. New vocabulary and experiences
help them to build upon previous knowledge as they continue to
grow and develop
We believe that children learn through appropriate play experiences.

A Typical Day

"Arrival; door to door drop off is available. Children learn independence by
identifying their own hooks, hanging backpacks and coats, and placing
lunchboxes in the appropriate areas; assistance is provided.
Free Play; children can play with any of the toys that are out in the classroom.
Occasionally special activities will take place during this time as the teacher
works with a few children at a time.
Together Time/Circle Time; after cleaning up the toys, the children gather
together on the rug. A song begins this time full of teacher directed games and
finger plays as various topics are introduced and discussed. Songs, flannel board
activities, books, games and finger plays are often used during this time.
Snack Time; children visit the bathroom to wash their hands before joining
together for a snack and a drink. A simple prayer is recited before snack begins.
Activity Time; this is a group activity usually done at the tables. It could involve
painting, coloring, cutting, gluing and/or tracing. Cooking and Science
experiments are often done during this time also.
Outdoor/Indoor Play; children play outside as they develop their gross motor
skills. During inclement weather we use the upstairs hall for our gross motor
activities. Tricycles are used and bike helmets are not available. However,
parents are welcome to bring a labeled bike helmet from home, if they feel it
Story Time; each session a book is read to the class. The book compliments the
discussions of the day. Reading aloud is a very important focus of the day.
Music/Movement; a variety of CDs, songs and musical instruments are used as
we explore the world of music through sounds and movements.
Dismissal; children are dismissed at their classroom door by the teacher to their
waiting parent or guardian."
