General Approach to Learning: Montessori

Day in the Life

General School Mission

"HPMS values Dr. Montessori's thought that children learn differently than adults. Children use all five of their senses, effortlessly absorb knowledge from the environment and have "sensitive periods" for learning that coincide with human development.
At HPMS, classrooms are mixed-age, mixed ability communities where younger children learn from older children. The older role models master concepts by teaching them to younger children. The older children also learn social responsibility as they are expected to help and teach the younger children, who tend to admire them as the leaders of the classroom community.

A Typical Day

"Daily Schedule
8:45 - 9:00 am Morning Greeting
Children are greeted at the door on Erie Street. Parents sign in their child at the door.
9:00 am School Begins
Please note: If you arrive after 9 am the school day has started. Please walk your child to the second floor and sign him/her in with the office staff.
9:00 am - 10:45 am (or so) Morning Work Cycle
One of the fundamental principles of the Montessori Method is that children have an innate love of learning. The way a young child learns is to teach him/herself by interacting with a carefully prepared environment. In a Montessori learning community each material has a purpose. The "work cycle" is a block of time for children to work with the materials in the context of a social environment. During the work cycle, teachers present individual and small group lessons while observing how children process information, interact with each other and work with the materials. Teachers create an individualized lesson plan for each child based on these observations.
10: 45 - 11:00 am Circle Time
Circle time is community time. Children sing songs, review the calendar, and discuss community topics/classroom themes.
11:00 - 11:15 am Transition for Recess
Children are invited to use the bathroom and prepare themselves for recess.
11:15 - 11:45 am Recess
Children play in Hamilton Park, weather permitting. An indoor playroom is also available for gross motor activities.
11:45 am - 12:00 pm Dismissal or Lunch
11:45 - 12:00 pm Dismissal
Half day children are dismissed from the Erie Street exit.
11:45 - 12:15 pm Lunch
Children staying for lunch wash their hands and eat lunch with the teachers. This is a time for grace and courtesy lessons, as well as oral language development. Please send your child with a lunch s/he can eat independently, one which does not require preparation by the teachers.
12:15 pm - 12:30 pm Clean Up
Children are expected to clean their own space, return their lunch bag to the cart, push in their chair, and wash their face and hands. Napping children make their own cots and may choose 2 books to read. If a child is not asleep within 20-30 minutes, the child may join the afternoon work cycle. Older children are expected to help the younger children get ready for nap and fulfill their job chart responsibilities (e.g., water plants, sweep the floor, wash the tables, feed the rabbit, etc).
12:00-12:45 pm Dismissal
Please ring the bell at Erie Street and a teacher will bring your child downstairs.
12:30 - 2:30 pm Nap or Afternoon Work Cycle
Kindergartners receive "Kindergarten lessons," then meet with a teacher to arrange a work plan for the afternoon cycle and the following morning. Younger children join the work cycle when they wake up from nap.
2:30 - 3:00 pm Story or Playground Time
Children read books, act out stories and/or go to the playground.
3:00 - 3:15 pm Dismissal
Children are dismissed from the Erie Street exit. Please sign out your child.
Please note: the daily schedule may change to meet the needs of the children. Parents will be informed of a schedule change in the weekly note.
HPMS offers small group lessons in Art, Music, Yoga and Literacy Enrichment. Your child's Lead Teacher will notify you of your child's "Specialist Schedule."
