Childworks started as a home-based preschool program. The school has grown over more than thirty years and now accepts infants to 4 year olds in a new facility. It is still family-owned and directed by Jo Haag, the original leader, therefore providing more personal attention for each child.

Philosophy & Approach

School Philosophy

General Approach to Learning: Play-Based, Teacher-Led

From the Director:

Childwork's program has been developed over more than thirty years to best meet the educational, physical, and emotional needs of each of our children. Every effort is made to direct and nurture the child's development within a loving and secure environment. Our objective is to provide as many opportunities as possible for discovery, exploration, and self expression. We believe this will encourage the social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth and development of the child.

From the Director:

We believe that preschool children learn best in a child-centered educational setting that is developmentally appropriate. We strive hard to address each child's diverse and changing needs. We also believe that families are an integral part of the educational process and encourage them to be active participants. We plan all activities to help each child grow and explore the fascinating world of learning.

Quality of Teaching

Individualized Teaching: From the Director

A variety of learning activities are planned each day for the children. Classroom routines are designed to assist children in becoming independent and competent. Each classroom follows their own schedule, based on the needs of the children. We offer a well rounded developmentally appropriate curriculum based on the philosophy that children learn best through hands-on activities that address the needs of the whole child. This reflects on the belief that children need a balance of child-initiated and teacher-facilitated activites each day. This approach reflects the beliefs of Jean Piaget, Erik Erikson, Lev Vygotsky, David Ausubel and Jerome Bruner. This approach is grounded in sound child development theory and appropriate practices. Themes are used to introduce information and learning takes place as a child explores and manipulates real objects and events. Teachers are always available to guide a child as they explore activities.
