Philosophy & Approach

Day in the Life

General School Mission

"The Tesseract philosophy embraces the idea that it is important to educate the whole child. Consequently, our curriculum and teaching methods address cognitive development, and learning across disciplines, while attending to students' creative, physical and emotional development. Our curriculum is grounded in the idea that children and people learn by actively constructing knowledge, not by simply acquiring knowledge. We believe that skills have a purpose and, if taught in a meaningful context, are better learned.

The Tesseract liberal arts curriculum, enriched with daily Spanish, music, arts, integrated technology and physical education and whole child development philosophies educates, challenges and excites the students for a long life of continuous learning.

The Tesseract School embraces the community of learners philosophy. Faculty, students and parents work together to achieve academic excellence, while celebrating individual achievement. The environment is one in which students feel safe, nurtured, and challenged to meet their potential.

Each Tesseract student is viewed as an individual with unique interests and modes of learning. We know that what inspires one child does not always motivate another. That is why we educate each child in ways uniquely designed to best take advantage of his or her individual learning styles. That is why we encourage our parents to collaborate with their children to help us establish documented goals for the school year. We call this the Personal Education Plan. Throughout the year parents meet with teachers to review and update progress. Teachers also keep parents informed about their child's progress and activities using Friday communications and daily discussions.

A typical day at The Tesseract School is uncustomary. There are no bells or lines, and children do not file into rows of desks. Instead, in an effort to build community, our day begins with an all school Morning Meeting. Morning Meeting is an excellent opportunity for students to share information, show support for one another and hone public speaking skills. Some students may present an original play in Spanish, while others may act out a storybook or perform a new song.
