Philosophy & Approach

Day in the Life

General School Mission

"At Kids Under Construction, we have a passion and drive to provide the utmost in early childhood education. We believe that the early years of a child's life are the most important. We are committed to helping you and your family in building a firm foundation for your child's future through fun, engaging learning activities that help promote confidence, self-esteem, problem-solving & conflict management skills and help children gain the basic-skills knowledge they will need in kindergarten. Our program was built on the philosophy that daily, repeated exposure to activities that promote basic-skills and social development is the key to later school success.

A Typical Day

"8:30 - 9:00
Welcome & Free Exploration
Children ease into the day by coming into their starting classroom &
socializing with classmates. Games, toys, and learning materials from this
classroom are laid out around the room for the children to freely experiment
with & explore. Parents & teachers greet each other as well.
9:00 - 9:15
Opening Circle
At this Circle Time, we welcome everyone to school, take attendance, and do
calendar activities. Then, we talk about the topic(s) of the day, the activities we
are going to do, & read a book which focuses on the topic(s) for the day.
Finally, we end Circle Time with some music & movement.
9:15 - 9:45
Learning Centers / Concepts
At this time 2-3 different stations are set up in the classroom for children to
rotate through. These stations focus on a math and literacy topic(s). All of the
learning center activities are engaging, hands-on activities in which the children
may explore in large groups, small groups or individually.
9:45 - 10:00
Snack & Stories
Children use the restroom and wash for snack. During snack, the children sit at
the table, converse with one another, and eat together. The teacher may also
read a book to the children as they enjoy their snack. Children learn to clean up
after themselves when they are finished with their snack.
10:00 - 10:30
Outside or Gym
This is time for the children to burn some energy, explore nature if we are
outdoors, and learn organized games if the weather requires us to stay indoors.
This time in the day is also used to transition from one classroom to the other.
10:30 - 10:50
Learning Centers / Concepts
Now we are in the second classroom & a second set of learning center activities
are set up around the classroom for the children to rotate through. In this
classroom, the centers focus on fine motor, writing development, and a science
topic. Again, these centers may be explored as a large group, small group, or
individually, depending on the activity.
10:50 - 11:10
Free Exploration
Games, toys, and learning materials are available around the classroom for the
children to freely experiment & explore.
11:10 - 11:30
Art
Children are able to create an art project that relates to the topic of the day or
make their own creation with selected materials.
11:30 - 11:50
Closing Circle
At this Circle Time, we start with a movement activity to get our wiggles out.
Next, we review what we did during class, talk about what we learned and what
we will do the following class day. We may also read another book or do one
final large group activity before we get ready to go home.
11:50 - 12:00
Pack Up & Departure
Children pack up their belongings and get ready to go home. This teaches
children: a) self-help skills, fine motor skills & independence; b) to take
responsibility for their personal belongings; c) to help others in need. When
everyone is ready, we dismiss children to their parents. Dismissal time is also
another time for teachers & parents to talk with each other.
