Day in the Life

General School Mission

"Sunshine's mission is to provide an outstanding learning environment that allows each child's own motivation and interest to be the starting point for learning. Sunshine nurtures a love of learning, self-motivation, a mind capable of independent judgement, and a healthy respect for oneself, others, and the environment. We believe each child's learning experience should be both fulfilling and enjoyable."

A Typical Day

"The following activities are typically provided each day in the toddler environment:
Free Play.
This is a block of time for the children to freely move about the environment, exploring and working on what motivates them. This includes building in the block area, doing puzzles, working with play-doh, reading books in the library, dramatic play in the house area, and a large assortment of manipulative activities.
Sensory Art and Movement Exercises.
Sunshine varies these activities daily and offers children the choice of doing different individual and group activities. These activities often include; water play, sand play, play-doh, glurch, shaving cream, magnets, painting, coloring, drawing, dancing, and playing musical instruments..
Large Group Time.
The toddlers gather together daily to work on basic concepts such as, vocabulary, counting, colors, shapes, seriation, self-concepts, seasons, and time. We incorporate the learning of such concepts into songs, rhymes, stories, and finger play, to create an engaging, inviting, and enjoyable group learning experience.
Gross Motor Activities.
Time is set aside each day (usually once in the morning and once in the afternoon), to focus on developing the children's large muscle groups. There are a number of ways we do so, which usually are determined by the weather. We go to the Sunshine playground in dry weather, where the children are able to run, climb, jump, kick, throw, and dig. We will also often go for short walks around the neighborhood. If the weather is poor we will spend time in the Undercroft, where the children have a large indoor space to run. We have tricycles, push-toys, balls, and climbers in the Undercroft for the children to use on days we are indoors.
