Philosophy & Approach

Day in the Life

General School Mission

"Howard Preschool, Inc. provides the opportunity for the preschooler to express himself as an individual in a group, to become involved in his own learning as well as in conjunction with others, discovering new areas of interest and new reasons for communication with his peers and adults. Before a child leaves, we hope that he will have acquired a love of learning and a pleased attitude toward self, resulting in his ability to successfully meet all later school experiences.

A Typical Day

"3-Year Olds:
During the first hour and a half, the child may select activities from any interest centers located throughout the classroom. During this time, the child may work one-to-one with an adult to complete an art project using various materials. This block of time is followed by clean-up and bathroom time then snack time. Each class rounds out the day with circle time, which may include stories, fingerplays, songs, poems, etc., and a large muscle activity. Holidays, parties, and special crafts and events, culminating in a May Fair for children and their families, are all included in this program.

4-Year Olds:
In addition to completing "academic" projects which emphasize listening to and following d-rections, starting and completing a task, working independently, understanding concepts, etc., the child is given an opportunity to develop a positive self-image by comfortably speaking in front of a group, handling job responsibilities, making decisions regarding his activities, completing tasks as an individual and as part of a team and meeting visitors to the school. Some of our units are Colors and Shapes, Patterning, People Who Help Us, Numbers and Sequencing. There is also at least an hour of self-selected activities each day as well as snack time, circle time, and a large muscle activity. Holiday parties and their accompanying activities as well as graduation and field trips and parent visits are celebrated at appropriate times throughout the school year."
