"We perceive our basic function as one of helping children to learn whenever they are ready to do so. We do not stress the acquisition of a body of knowledge as such, but rather the development of independence and self-esteem that benefits the child physically, emotionally, and intellectually. The teacher’s role in this situation is one of a learning “guide”—a complementary helper, not an aggressive authoritarian.
