Philosophy & Approach

School Philosophy

General Approach to Learning: Play-Based

From the Director:

Our curriculum is a combination of thematically-based and child-directed activities that focus on process rather than product. It includes a daily variety of developmentally appropriate activities in the areas of art, music, creative movement, science, number concepts, language and literature. A child's physical development is also important, and we provide children with a balance of both fine and gross motor activities. Outside play is an integral part of our day. In addition, a trained specialist leads the children in preschool yoga twice a month.

Day in the Life

General School Mission

Our philosophy is developmentally based, respecting the individual differences (emotional, social, cognitive and physical) in each child. We believe children ages 3-5 need the opportunity to play, create and explore within their surroundings. At North Avenue, teachers act as facilitators in the classroom to provide a loving, nurturing environment where children are given "freedom within limits" to imagine, explore and discover their world.

Our goal is to foster self-direction, motivation and confidence in each individual to encourage "active learners". North Avenue strives to provide each child with the foundation and essential tools needed to develop "life skills" and the building blocks necessary for the more formal cognitive future schooling.

A Typical Day

A typical day at North Avenue consists of:
* free play children's choice of blocks/building,
housekeeping/dress up, small manipulatives, free art/teacher directed art activity, gross motor play.
* Clean up and snack.
* Circle time enriched with music, story books and interactive games and stories
* Outside play is an integral part of our morning.
Children have access to riding toys and recently updated playground.

Home-School Connection

Home-School Connection: From the Director

At North Avenue Nursery School, we have an open door
policy. Involvement in the classroom is not required, we do,
however, welcome parents who wish to share special
interests, hobbies or skills with the class.

In addition, there are several opportunities for parents to
become involved with the overall operation of the school.
North Avenue is governed by a "board of trustees" consisting
of parent board members. You may wish to participate on
the Parent Committee which organizes special school events
such as a annual potluck dinner and yard sale.
