Philosophy & Approach

School Philosophy

General Approach to Learning: Montessori

From the Director:

The Wellesley Montessori School (WMS) is committed to providing an outstanding learning environment for children from the ages of 2 years and nine months through age 6. Our goal is to have each child fulfill his or her potential in a warm, nurturing, caring, safe and challenging atmosphere. The WMS is dedicated to the philosophy and principles of Dr. Maria Montessori. We follow the child-centered Montessori method of education. This three year program is designed to provide your child with the tools fundamental to learning while fostering their independence. We encourage parents to read about the Montessori educational philosophy for children.

Day in the Life

General School Mission

Affiliated with the American Montessori Society, we offer a full Montessori program. The students have exposure to, have lessons in and work with materials in the area of Practical Life, Sensorial Development, Geography, Math, Language (English phonics), and Science. The children spend a part of their class in a group: singing, movement, show and tell, daily class lesson, stories and snack. They spend the other part of the class period independently working, playing and choosing their activities.

We attempt to help the child learn to do for their selves, to be able to make appropriate choices, to develop a strong self-image, as well as to grow and learn at his own pace.

Home-School Connection

Home-School Connection: From the Director

The school is equipped with one-way mirrors. We encourage you to come and observe your child throughout the school year. The best times to observe your child are during the presentation of materials (beginning of the session) and during the work period (immediately after the presentation). Please feel free to come at the time that suits you best. No appointments are necessary!

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be scheduled. The dates will be announced after school is in session. You will be able to schedule a 30-minute conference on the day set aside for your childs teacher. Classes will be in session as usual. You may speak with the teachers at anytime throughout the school year, not just at the scheduled conference time.

During the school year we will also have a few Parents Nights to provide interesting and informative evenings with topics relating to the Montessori experience and other subjects relating to the 3 to 6 year old child.

Handling Separation: From the Director

The first week (Wed to Fri) is a 1.5 hour session with parents. 3rd year students stay for the normal 3 hour session and these parents typically do not stay. The second week is an abbreviated 2 hour session for 1st & 2nd year students with no parents. The third week everyone goes to the normal 3 hour sessions. Children enrolled in "child center" (after &/or pre-care) will be kept in child center for the hours outside of the adaptation period, only for the days they are enrolled in child center.
