"The Sandy Bay Preschool is a parent-cooperative program that believes in the principles of early childhood education that honor the unique capabilities of each young child. Recognizing that the young child is a sensory learner, we are committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment that allows for exploration and experimentation in order to develop each child's understanding of how the world works. We respect each child as an individual. We believe it is our responsibility to facilitate the child's social, emotional, cognitive and physical growth through developmentally appropriate practices that emphasize process rather than product.
Mondays are reserved for older children, while Tuesdays through Thursdays we have a multi-age classroom. The multi-age experience allows older children to be leaders and to nurture their young friends. The younger children have older "buddies" that help them gain confidence and comfort with the classroom environment and daily routines. This exposes all the children to a wide range of abilities and fosters a cooperative learning environment.
This environment is then paired with a teaching style that is probably best described as "developmental". We provide activities that are appropriate to the entire spectrum of our children's ages and stages of development. These activities are presented in theme-based units, within which children can usually choose among several activities, can choose how far to pursue these activities, and can play alone or in small groups. The whole group often comes together for songs, stories or other "circle time" activities. This variety of creative, hands-on, open-ended activities provides a format for promoting curiosity, imagination, cooperative interactions, problem-solving skills, and motor development.
While kindergarten readiness is a goal for the older children in the program, these skills are introduced informally, through play.
Sandy Bay Preschool honors diversity and seeks to eliminate biases and prejudices. We do not discriminate in providing services to children and their families on the basis of race, religion, cultural heritage, political beliefs, national origin, disability, marital status or sexual orientation.
