Philosophy & Approach

Day in the Life

General School Mission

"In todays busy world, children need unhurried time to "just be kids and have fun". The preschool years are a precious time in their lives, where their needs for love and acceptance, play and exploration, and making new connections are our priorities.
An important component of our curriculum is the family. We want to get to know all the family members, including pets, and encourage parents to linger during arrival time checking in with the teachers and playing with their child. As the parent-teacher relationship grows, the child's trust and security blossoms and more energy can be focused on learning and discovery. We use our knowledge of the stages of development and child observation to set up our learning centers. The children's interests guide our choice of materials and activities.
Our classroom is divided into approximately eight learning centers:
- Art which includes crafts, play dough, writing, easel work
- House for pretend play and dress up
- Block and Building
- Math, Alphabet, Board games
- Reading corner
- Dramatic play (theme changed monthly)
- Science which includes a water and sensory table (changed monthly)
- Music and movement
- Playground, spacious and fenced in
The children are encouraged to follow their interests and make choices during free play time. We maintain a balance of child directed and teacher directed activities throughout the day. As they visit the different areas, they are practicing many of the basic skills that prepare them for kindergarten. They're exposed to letter recognition and printing, counting and number comparisons, listening and reading comprehension, observing and questioning during science time, making friends and taking tuns, and developing their gross motor skills on the playground. A Typical Day

"A Typical Day at the Playhouse
Arrival Time (9:00) Children and parents are greeted and checked in by a teacher. Parents are welcome to chat with the teacher and write any special instructions in the Parent Notebook.
Free Choice (9:15 - 10:30) Children are free to visit our learning centers and play/explore the materials. Teachers are actively engaged in facilitating this process and guiding social behavior.
Clean Up A child flashes the lights to signal the transition to clean up. Children are encouraged to take care of their school and be responsible for tidying up.
Science (10:40 - 11:00) We are all scientists and have questions. We test our ideas in small groups and record our findings. We use our senses and observation skills to work through a variety of experiments.
Snack We are a peanut
ut free school. We provide snack daily, always including a fresh fruit or vegtable.
Group Story (9:00) The children gather in the reading corner to sing songs, listen to a story and participate in guessing games. The children practice their ability to attend and participate in a large group activity.
Outside Play We go outside year round. If the weather doesn't cooperate, we do music and movement inside to exercise and release our energy.
Departure (12:00) Children gather their projects and backpacks and are checked out by a teacher as they're re-united with their parents. Parents can inquire about their child's day at this time.
Lunch & Play (12:00 - 2:00/3:00) Children bring their lunches and stay for some extra play, reading and crafts."
