Harbor City School (HCS) is a non-profit, independent preschool located in the heart of East Boston. Created by a small group of dedicated local parents in 2010.

HCS provides a nurturing, safe, creative and educational environment for all children. We use an emergent curriculum and follow the developmental model of education, encouraging academic and social growth through exploration, cooperative problem solving, and critical thinking. Children develop social and educational relationships with supportive adults. Activities are age appropriate and with consistent guidance, designed to foster the cognitive, emotional, social and physical development of all children while still meeting the individual needs of children.

At HCS, parents actively participate in their child’s preschool experience through our co-op structure, with activities for families both in and out of the classroom.

HCS does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, cultural heritage, national origin, religion, political beliefs, sexual orientation, family structure or toilet training status.

Day in the Life

General School Mission

The mission of the Harbor City School is to be a quality early education partner to families in East Boston and surrounding areas.

Partnering with the student is achieved though our strength-base emergent program that allows the student to make use of what they already know and love to guide the curriculum. All activities are age-appropriate and are focused on being nurturing, safe, creative and educational.

Partnering with parents, guardians and even extend family is achieved through our cooperative structure. Again using a strength-based principle, we integrate families in classroom time and also in the operations of the school. Parents bring their natural skills and experience and discover that they are highly valued by the entire school.
