Day in the Life

General School Mission

"Our objectives are as follows:
To help each child develop and educate his own individuality toward his unknown potential.
To help the group of children develop a social structure among themselves that originates from the contrasting needs of the individual and the group and makes them complementary.
To help the child develop and educate himself in a way natural to him, so that he may remain in touch with his own nature and develop a reverence for the organic order of the universe. The result: a whole, integrated human being vitally involved in his own development and sensitive to the needs of others. "

A Typical Day

"7:00 a.m. - 8:15 a.m. Early arrivals greeted by directress. Children stay in the Construction Room. They read books, work construction room materials or help with chores such as folding clothes or dusting.
8:15 a.m. Group Time. Group usually lasts about 20 minutes. Activities done while in Group include: seasonal songs, reading message from message board by student, marking the calendar by student and naming of the month, day of the week, number date of month, observing birthdays, "the cards" (the flash cards are arranged into categories of 10 cards each with up to 5 categories. Example: Category - Insects - bee, differential grasshopper, common housefly), pledge to our flag and preparing for class.
8:35 a.m. Children are dismissed to the Montessori classroom where they begin their day with the Montessori materials. All children should have arrived by this time.
During the first few weeks of school, the children will come together to discuss social graces such as how to pull out and push in a chair, how to greet one another, how and when to say excuse me, thank you, I’m sorry, etc., how to roll and unroll a rug (this will be their work space), how to walk around a rug and how to hang up jackets. After a few weeks of early morning group, the children will enter the classroom by greeting their teachers with a handshake and begin the work of their choice. The children can only take a material from the shelf if they have had a lesson on that material.
9:00 a.m. Snacks are put out for the children. Children go to the snack counter when there is a place vacant at the snack table. Five children at a time may have snacks. After snacks, the child will prepare the table for another child by placing a fresh napkin and cleaning away any crumbs. He then washes his dishes and returns to find his activity.
10:30 a.m. Snacks are removed from the classroom. The children are dismissed to go outside, usually with the words, "Children listen." Upon hearing these words, the children become statues, listening for instructions from the directress.
11:00 a.m. If the children are outside, the bell rings. The first bell means time to pick up the toys. The second bell means it is time to return to the classroom for Stories and Show and Tell. A directress reads stories to the children and then the children share with the group any objects brought for show and tell. We then prepare for lunch.
11:30 a.m. After all have washed up for lunch, the blessing is said and the children set out their lunches as they were shown at the beginning of the year, using one napkin as a place mat and removing the food in the order that it is to be eaten. After completing lunch, the child will replace any food not eaten back into the lunch box, so parents will see the amount of food or kind of food to pack. Also the child is responsible for washing and drying his/her table, as well as cleaning his/her floor with the dustpan and brush after lunch each day.
12:00 p.m. The children go to the TV room to watch educational videos, musical tapes or other tapes for about 30 minutes or until all have finished eating and cleaning tables.
12:30 p.m. The younger children rest or nap. Older children go into the classroom for further work with the Montessori materials.
2:45 p.m. Class is dismissed. Older children straighten materials on the shelves. The children are dismissed to the outside or Construction Room depending on the weather.
3:00 p.m. All children go home except Extended Care children.
5:30 p.m. Little Learners closes."
