Philosophy & Approach

School Philosophy

General Approach to Learning: Play-Based

From the Director:

Curriculum is theme based with the entire classroom taking on the theme. Themes changes every 3 - 4 weeks and include such things as Bears, Transportation, Dinosaurs, All About Me, Nursery Rhymes, Books, Rain Forest, etc. The children then are immersed in the theme gaining different aspects in the various learning centers.

Quality of Teaching

Individualized Teaching: From the Director

Teachers do informal assessments of the children on a daily basis. Using those assessments, they modify the upcoming activities so that all of the children are challenged, but not frustrated. If a child needs more practice with cutting skills, the child will be encouraged to cut out basic shapes for the project but pre-cut shapes will also be available; a child who is interested and ready to write and spell will be encouraged to write his/her own dictation on projects and activities

Day in the Life

General School Mission

The programs and curriculum at Woodside are based on not only formal education and training in childrenâ??s developmental stages and characteristics, but also on years of experience with children. Woodside caregivers daily nurture and observe children 12 months through 12 years as they pass through these stages. The curriculum is based on the belief in the importance and appropriateness of active learning for children in these formative years; therefore, children are encouraged to be active learners, to interact with the environment and the people around them. We consider play essential in this interaction. Through play, children can manipulate the world around them and learn various principles. It is this focus on the childâ??s natural curiosity, creativity and physical manipulation of the environment that is the cornerstone of our thinking. We also believe that it is important to help shape well-rounded children. In order to stimulate this, we offer a variety of activities for each area of development - social, emotional, physical, and cognitive.

The teachers maintain contact with parents on a regular basis at drop off and pick up times - younger children have written information sheets, older children rely on verbal communication. In addition, monthly newsletters are sent home full of information about the curriculum, upcoming activities and special home/school learning opportunities. Each class also does written evaluations twice a year and a parent/teacher conference once a year.
