Philosophy & Approach

Day in the Life

General School Mission

" We believe that our school should be a child development center, in its truest sense. This means that we have concern for the whole spectrum of development, including social, emotional, physical and intellectual growth.
Emphasis is placed on accepting the child at the level he is. We try to meet his growth needs and to respect his individuality. The methods we favor stress first hand experience, freedom for the child to select activities for much of the day, and indirect modes of teaching, centering around play and games. In these ways, we hope to help each child feel competent through making, doing, and thinking."

A Typical Day

"A typical day for your child would include opportunities to learn in each of these curriculum areas:
Painting, drawing, modeling, collage and other visual art materials, music, dance, dramatic play.
Experimentation with sand, water, flour, finger paint, mud, snow, and other materials.
Intellectual development involving language skills, sensory perception, critical thinking, problem solving, emergent literacy, concepts in math, science and creative expression.
Children are introduced to computer skills as every classroom has a computer which we received through a technology grant.
Small muscle development through the use of drawing tools, scissors, construction-type materials and visual perception training activities.
Large muscle development through the use of workbench, climbers, balance beams, blocks, balls, and obstacle courses, indoors, and outdoors.
Development of positive self-concepts and realistic awareness of responsibility to others, through individual, small group, and large group experience."
