School Philosophy

General Approach to Learning: Play-Based

From the Director:

Research tells us that students learn best by "doing". Our inquiry-based approach is driven by the natural curiosity of children to learn and discover through play. At Saint Mary School children are respected as invidivuals; teachers take children where they are and support their academic, spiritual, social and emotional growth.

Quality of Teaching

Individualized Teaching: From the Director

At Saint Mary School children are respected as individuals. Teachers start with students' strengths to develop skills and support additional learning. Especially in early childhood education, students can be developmentally very different from each other. Using a variety of research-based instructional strategies, our teachers design lessons and activities that meet the needs of individual learners and can be easily adapted to engage students at all different levels.

Day in the Life

General School Mission

Saint Mary School is committed to the holistic education of children. Children are certainly greater than the "sum of their parts" so we strive to provide an education that takes into account the many facets of an individual child. Our academically excellent school programs and diverse array of activities (including academic, the arts, athletic and service opportunities) allow children to develop as unique, capable, articulate people who succeed in highschool, college and life.

A Typical Day

Our preschool schedules are as follows:

PreK 3 meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 - 11:15 AM.

PreK 4 meets Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 7:45 - 10:30 AM or 9:00 - 11:45 AM.

Home-School Connection

Home-School Connection: From the Director

Communicating with parents in extremely important at Saint Mary School, as parents are a child's first teachers and an integral component of success in school. Teacher newsletters come home weekly and our school website serves as a link to school information. Our principal keeps a monthly newsletter as well as a school blog, to keep families and students informed and updated. While there is NO mandatory volunteer committment for families at Saint Mary School, there are certainly many opportunities for a family to get involved both in and out of the classroom.

Separation is Handled through:

  • Pre-entry meetings with parents at school
  • Small group sessions
  • Extra staff dedicated to handle separation

Handling Separation: From the Director

For young children, separating from a parent and moving to a school environment can sometimes be dificult. At Saint Mary we respect the feeling of nervousness that sometimes accompanies starting school. Our teachers, administration and staff work together with parents, to ease this transition with patience and kindness until every child feels comfortable and excited to come to school!
