Philosophy & Approach

Day in the Life

General School Mission

"Our philosophy is based on individual and group needs. Staff members observe the children and talk with the parents. We combine what we learn from parents and children with the developmental theory to foster competence in each child.
We believe that young children learn best through actual experience and participation. We provide opportunities for children to select, explore, and practice skills. A variety of materials and prepared activities are available. Children use play to make sense of the world. What may look like "child's play" to an adult is actually learning in progress.
Our daily schedule includes a balance of quiet/active, individual/group, and child-selected/teacher-directed activities. During the day, your child will have opportunities to develop skills in each of these areas: social, emotional, cognitive, language, physical and self help.

A Typical Day

"Daily Preschool Schedule :
Each Monday, a schedule for the week is available to you. You may want to look through the schedule and discuss it with your child. Children may have difficulty answering general questions such as "What did you do in school today?" Parents may find they will get more detailed descriptions when they ask specific questions about the child's day.
The daily schedule includes the following activities and areas:
Arrival: During this time the children come into the preschool, hang up their coats and select activities from the areas around the school.
Group Time (Circle): The children gather as a group two times a day. Songs, creative movement, stories, and special presentations take place during this time.
Snack: We conduct snack in a family style setting where everybody passes food and drink. This is a time where we set a pleasant atmosphere where the children can converse with one another and the teachers. Manners are also practiced.
Small Group: Children are divided into small groups to work on specific activities and/or skills planned by the teacher. Activities may range from experimenting and creative problem solving, to storytelling, role-playing, and physical challenges. For the older "pre-k" children we work on early writing through Zoo Phonics and math skills.
Art and Activity: During this time the children participate in small groups doing art and activities. These activities can include painting, cooking, cutting, folding, drawing and pretend. On Wednesdays we have Tom Nash come in and do percussion with the children.
Clean-up/Transition: The children assist in cleaning up as they go along and after arrival and work times. Transition activities are designed to help children move smoothly from one part of the day to the next.
Lunch: The children again meet as a group. The goal during this time is to establish a calm and pleasant atmosphere where the children socialize with one another and their teachers.
Outside Play/Departure: Activities that use large motor skills are sometimes best offered outside. Unless the weather is completely forbidding, children go out for part of each day.
Staff: Valley Preschool is committed to providing qualified staff members. All staff members are CPR certified.
