Philosophy & Approach

School Philosophy

General Approach to Learning: Montessori

From the Director:

Our Montessori school is designed to optimize the sensitive years between two and six, when children can absorb information from an enriched environment. From the Director:

Between the ages of 3 and 6, the child's physical and mental powers are rapidly developing. At this time, it is imperative to establish order and clarity within the child's mind. To satisfy this need, the classroom has specifically designed learning apparatus and exercises designed by Dr. Maria Montessori.

Quality of Teaching

Individualized Teaching: From the Director

Our Montessori teachers complete a teacher training course for each grade level in which they are certified. The teachers learn how to use specifically designed Montessori materials for all subject areas. Teachers and interns are trained to work with the students at their own pace.

Day in the Life

General School Mission

Our mission is to provide education based on truth and correct principles in an environment of peace and security. We follow the methods of Dr. Maria Montessori. Our method is based on respect of the individual child and his/her individual timetable for growth and development. We seek to build "not only good mathematicians, proficient linguists, profound scientist, or brilliant literary lights, but also honest men [and women] with virtue, temperance, and brotherly love. We seek to make men and women who prize truth, justice, wisdom, benevolence, and self-control as the choicest acquisitions of a successful life." (quote taken from Treasures of Life, Claire Middlemiss (1962))

A Typical Day

To young children, there is something very special about doing things that adults find ordinary. Practical life exercises such as pouring and spooning, washing dishes or polishing shoes completely absorb them. Children are taught how to do each of the learning activities and then are allowed the freedom to choose what they would like to work on and how long the work on it.

Home-School Connection

Home-School Connection: From the Director

Parents at Lighthouse Montessori School receive weekly e-mails, monthly newsletters and parent teacher conference twice each school year. In addition, parents are always welcome to schedule a time to visit with their child's teacher at anytime.

Separation is Handled through:

  • Pre-entry meetings with parents at school

Handling Separation: From the Director

Great care is taken to provide a warm, nurturing and stimulating environment for the children. Children are reassured that they are safe and that their parents will be back after school is finished. Children are encouraged to join in the activities and explore the environment.
