Philosophy & Approach

School Philosophy

General Approach to Learning: Play-Based, Teacher-Led

From the Director:

Toddler and Preschool Program I offer a toddler and preschool program for children ages 1 year to 5 years from September to May for all children in my program. We have a daily circle time, which includes songs, calendar, weather, stories, fingerplays, flannel board stories and music and movement. In addition I offer different centers that include art, science, math, literature and language, small and large motor activities, dramatic play, games, computer, sensory (water, sand, rice, etc) tables and other fun activities. During the summer months a summer program is offered for the same monthly rate which is less structure as we do spend more time outside. My goal for providing this program is to promote social/emotional, physical, cognitive and language development. Children sometimes do not feel like participating and will not be forced to do so. It is the process of an activity not the product that is emphasized. This program is an additional fee of $15.00 per month per child for all children ages 2 year to 5 years enrolled in Debs Child Care. There is no reduction in the preschool material fee for part-time care, missed days or for any reason. School Age Children Program During track and summer breaks, I will provide learning activities based on their grade level and skills they are learning or working on. It is helpful if you keep me updated on your activities at school so I can plan activities accordingly. Depending on your child’s hours here at childcare, time will be set aside for homework in the afternoon only. A fee of $15.00 will be charged for materials during each track break and for each month in the summer for all children ages 5 to 12 enrolled in Debs Child Care. School age children are encouraged to begin their homework when returning from school but they will not be forced to do it nor is it my responsibility to ensure their homework is completed. No homework will be done prior to school.

Quality of Teaching

Individualized Teaching: From the Director

I make time to spend more one on one time with children, discuss issues with parents and together we decided what the next steps will be.

Day in the Life

General School Mission

Debs Child Care strives to ensure all children are offered care that promotes their physical, social, emotional and intellectual development through developmentally appropriate activities. I will assist and encourage each child’s abilities and skills throughout each stage of their development. I believe that family involvement is essential to quality childcare and I welcome and encourage your participation.

Home-School Connection

Home-School Connection: From the Director

I discuss this with parents in person, by e-mail or over the phone.

Separation

Separation is Handled through:

  • Pre-entry meetings with parents at school

Handling Separation: From the Director

I encourage parents to bring their child during the interview process, and make short visits to preschool before their actual start date if this is possible. I also ask parents to speak in a positive manner to their child about preschool.
