School Philosophy

General Approach to Learning: Play-Based

From the Director:

JKPS is committed to the total development of each child. Our play-based philosophy strives to stimulate social, emotional and spiritual growth, as well as provide academic, creative and social challenges.

Quality of Teaching

Individualized Teaching: From the Director

John Knox Preschool is a developmental preschool in which each child is given the opportunity to progress at his own level. We believe each child is a unique individual with his own pattern of growth and development. Teachers vary individual instruction within a small-group setting, alternating skill grouping and mixed skill grouping to foster peer support and self esteem.

Day in the Life

General School Mission

"John Knox Preschool is a developmental preschool in which each child is given the opportunity to progress at his own level. We believe each child is a unique individual with his own pattern of growth and development. We strive to maintain a well-rounded program which provides worthwhile and happy experiences in daily living. This program provides growth and development of each child to the fullest extent of his capabilities. Our curriculum inspires investigation, exploration, manipulation and creative expression. Our goal is to help each child build a positive self-image by providing guided opportunities for social, emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual growth.

Home-School Connection

Home-School Connection: From the Director

JKPS uses our school website, supplemented by written correspondence, to communicate with parents. Classroom updates and activity calendars are provided monthly. Individual Parent-Teacher conferences are held midyear for all students. Additionally, critical individual concerns are addressed privately in a timely fashion.

Our open-door policy encourages parent involvement in the classroom. Regularly scheduled special activities are spaced throughout the year to encourage parent participation and develop our school community.

Separation

Separation is Handled through:

  • Pre-entry meetings with parents at school
  • Abbreviated schedule at start of school year

Handling Separation: From the Director

It is expected that many children, particularly our youngest students, will begin the school year with separation issues. We open our school year with a Meet & Greet activity where parents spend part of a school day in the classroom with their child. Once regular classes begin, we individualize attention to monitor separation issues, and occasionally request an abbreviated schedule for the first few days of school to develop children's sense of security in our environment.
