General Approach to Learning: Play-Based, Teacher-Led

From the Director:

PRECIOUS PEOPLE LEARNING CENTER is a Gold Seal, NAC Accredited pres-school and opened for business in January 1984. The Center is owned and operated by Barbra and Giuseppe Mastrota who relocated to Florida from England in 1995. The Center’s philosophy has always been to provide a setting for pre-school age children that foster learning and acceptable social behavior in a loving and caring environment. Our teachers are carefully selected for their ability to relate to children in a positive way. We believe that learning can be fun and practice this at Precious People Learning Center through activities that utilize music, arts & crafts, self expression and creative free play. Barbra Mastrota's credential's include a CDA for Child Care Center Operations, a CDA for Early Childhood Education, Director Credential - Foundation Level, CDA Equivalent - Child Care Operations. Education and completion of the mandated Department Of Children & Family 40 clock hours including 30 more hours for infant and toddler, special needs, and owner - operator classes. Department Of Education - Florida Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) Education Standards, Department Of Education - Emergent Literacy in the VPK Classroom. First aid and CPR are also kept current. Barbra is currently studying to complete a Bachelor's in Early Childhood at St. Petersburg College, Clearwater. Barbra has also sat on the Pinellas County License Board for childcare centers for two years as an advisory board member, and for a further for four years as a voting Board Member for child care licensed centers. Barbra is also the current Past President of the Pinellas Early Childhood Association and has sat on their board for 10 years in various board positions and is an advisor for Keiser College. The Center uses a spiral curriculum that is derived from a monthly theme and carried out throughout the various age groups at their level. This provides consistency and uniformity for the children. A monthly newsletter and a class calendar let parents know what their child is working on and special events coming up within the school. Two weekly reports describing your child’s activities, feelings and projects for the day will be handed out during the week. Spanish is included as part of the daily curriculum. Precious People Learning Center believes that an important part of child care is communication. We strive to keep the parents informed of their child’s progress and problems and we encourage parents in turn to talk to us about their concerns or satisfactions. Our open door policy lets parents become part of the school setting. We aim to be responsive to the individual needs of each child and family and we believe that you and your child will be happy at Precious People Learning Center.

Our Circle Time includes the number, color, shape and letter of the month and also our monthly theme. Finger plays, flannel board stories and songs are all worked around the theme of the month and generally lasts around 10 - 20 minutes depending on the age group. Art, science and cooking projects are included in the weekly lesson plans, which can be found on the parent bulletin board, located in your child’s classroom. SPANISH As part of the curriculum, we offer Spanish to our children on a daily basis. The program is designed to run over a 48-week period and will be included into our daily lesson plans. Our words of the week will be posted on your child's classroom bulletin board to keep you up to date. There is no extra cost for this program.

From the Director:

OUR MISSION Our mission is to provide the best possible quality of care in a clean, safe and loving educational environment. We believe that education is paramount and will be conveyed through our philosophy, teachers and curriculum. CURRICULUM Our curriculum will include four elements monthly, bi-weekly, and weekly depending on age group. The elements are defined as a number, color, shape, and letter introduced into circle time twice daily. Our circle time consists of the four elements, finger plays, flannel board stories and our monthly theme unit. Spanish is integrated daily into our curriculum. PHILOSOPHY & GOALS We believe……. • Each child is unique. We should respect, realize and appreciate the differences. • We must provide an environment that will give each child love security and a means of learning exploration and discovery on a level of success for him/her. • Learning should be made an enjoyable and rewarding experience and should not place pressure on a child. • Materials and methods should be varied to result in success for the child. • The four most important behaviors of parents and teachers are Love, Honesty, Fairness and Consistency. • That by attending to and complimenting the good behavior and by ignoring the negative, we can increase the positive.
