School Philosophy

General Approach to Learning: Play-Based, Waldorf

From the Director:

Waldorf education is based on the development of the child and this is apparent from Early Childhood through high school in Waldorf schools. Play, fantasy, and movement characterize daily life in a Waldorf kindergarten. The Waldorf curriculum includes a full range of arts and handcrafts. The children learn to pain, draw, model with beeswax and with clay, knit, crochet, sew and and embroider, and to carve and work with wood. They also learn to sing, and play music in addition to the full array of academics - the students are inspired for a life long love of learning.

Other subjects taught The children in Early Childhood are learning the important skills that are acquired through play and the interaction of others - compromise, negotiating, laying of moral fiber. Additionally, through their handwork their fingers, and focus is worked on for their journey into their formal education that will start at age 7.

Quality of Teaching

Individualized Teaching: From the Director

Waldorf teachers are passionate about the developing child. Our teachers are committed to further education specific to the Waldorf curriculum and methods. They attend a three (3) year training as well as a "preparing for the grades" each summer. In addition, outside evaluators and mentors are utilized to maintain the quality of our program and enhance the teacher knowledge and skills.

General School Mission

Waldorf education is based on the development of the child, the importance of the arts, the comprehensiveness of the curriculum, the understanding of the child as a moral, social and spiritual as well as an intellectual being and so on.

A Typical Day

Until the age of seven the child is basically a being of will and movement. Hence, games and movement activities that awaken and develop physical coordination play an important role. The child is also a being of play and fantasy - and play, according to Steiner, is "the work of the young child." In fact, the exercise of fantasy in free play is essential to the later development of intellectual thinking. The young child is still in a world of fantasy and imagination and should be allowed to enjoy and to fully experience this "kingdom of childhood."
