The Edwards Childcare and Preschool Center is a new state of the art childcare and preschool center with a focus in Math, Science Techonoly, Engineering and Literacy. Traditionally, Early Childhood Education has focused on teaching social and language skills. This has served us well. But in today’s highly technological world this is not enough. Having a solid understanding of Math and Science is increasingly a prerequisite to succeeding in a global community. The next generation will need a complex understanding of Math and Science whether it is in finance, sustainable energy, and conservation of resources, biomedical research or information sciences. One solution is to start children out right with a Math and Science centered Early Childhood Curriculum. If done right, this approach could support children’s natural interest in the mathematical and scientific world through exploration and hands on experimentation. Through integration of Math and Science into the larger curriculum, you also promote the development of the whole child. Areas such as health and nutrition make more sense to children when it is taught as a part of the natural sciences. Literacy is expanded to include counting and non-fiction science books. Language is supported through engaging hands on projects, discussions, research and experimentations. The language of science (proof, hypothesis testing, evidence) gets introduced early in the child’s vocabulary. At Edward’s Childcare and Preschool Center (ECPC) we are pioneering the use of Integrated Math and Science Curriculum (IMASC) to help prepare the next generation of children for the new century.

Philosophy & Approach

School Philosophy

General Approach to Learning: Play-Based

From the Director:

Our philosophy is based on the belief of equality, respect for our children and teachers, building strong, healthy relationships and the importance of trusting and respecting children as capable, able beings with amazing imagination. We strongly believe that when parents, employers and schools work together, we are paving a strategic educational road map of success for our children and assuring stronger, healthier and thriving communities for our children’s future. The role of parents is an important component for our children’s success. We embrace and respect parents as their children’s first teachers. We believe that children learn better when there is collaboration between parents/guardians and teachers. This collaboration between parents and teachers will provide children with the continued care they need to develop healthy social, emotional, physical and cognitive skills. We aim to create a calming, home-like environment for our children where furniture is age appropriate, has soft edges, pictures and art are at their eye level and there’s plenty of natural light which helps children feel safe, relaxed and eager to learn.

Other subjects taught The Suzuki approach, based on the so-called “mother tongue” method, differs from traditional methods of teaching instrumental music because it involves the student at a very early age, the encouraging the parent to participate in the role of the home-teacher. The method of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki seeks to develop the whole child, to help unfold his or her natural potential to learn and become a good and happy person. The purpose of Suzuki training is not to produce great artists, but to help every child to find the joy that comes through music-making. Through the Suzuki growing process, children thrive in a total environment of support; they develop confidence and self-esteem, determination to try difficult things, self-discipline and concentration as well as lasting enjoyment of music, and the sensitivity and skill for making music.

From the Director:

The Project Approach is an internationally known research based curriculum model focusing on the interest of children. The Project Approach is an in-depth investigation of the topic where learning is encouraged through exploratory projects and play. Projects are initiated and lead by the children and teachers play the role of facilitators; they document, observe and encourage further curiosity by asking open-ended questions. To further encourage a love of their environment, projects are locally-based and small groups are encouraged to build on prior experience and knowledge though exploration and problem solving. Similar to Reggio, this curriculum model supports, encourages, and respects children’s learning styles and imagination. There is also a strong belief that having a sense of community is one of the building blocks for children to succeed. The Creative Curriculum is nationally recognized research based curriculum that focuses on the needs of each child and his/her developmental needs. Similar Project Approach, the creative curriculum focuses on building strong, healthy and nurturing relationships with children, teachers and their families. There is a great level of understanding the importance of social emotional development in the early years. Children are encouraged to learn through exploration, play and discovery. The progressive style of the curriculum encourages the inclusion of children with disabilities, and has a non-bias view of the world. Moreover, it respects children as capable learners able to explore and learn in the areas of language, literacy, math and science. We chose this curriculum over others because it meets the needs of our philosophy which will assist in building successful roadmaps of success for future learning

Quality of Teaching

Individualized Teaching: From the Director

Because early intervention is key to the developmental needs of children, we screen every child who enters into our program. Once the screening results come in, we place the child in his/her individualized program. Teacher and parents work together to help child reach his/her goal or milestones.

Day in the Life

General School Mission

Our mission is to help young children reach their highest learning potential through our Integrated Math and Science program, to help our employees build satisfying careers through in-house advancement and to bridge the social economic gap through employer sponsored childcare.

Home-School Connection

Home-School Connection: From the Director

We love having our parents participate in the educational goals of thier children. We love having our parents share their expertise, especially when it's related to a topic being investigated, during field trips or just to come in and read to our children. We provide our parents with child related information during

Separation

Separation is Handled through:

  • Pre-entry meetings with parents at school
  • Small group sessions
  • Extra staff dedicated to handle separation
  • Parents in classroom early on
  • Abbreviated schedule at start of school year

Handling Separation: From the Director

We highly encourage our parents, grandparents and guardians to come into our center a few days before they go back to work and spend time in thier child's new classroom. This allows them the real life experience and day to day flow of the classroom as well as giving our teachers an opportunity to get to know their new student and his or her family, thier personal schedules, including likes and dislikes; making their transition smoother.
