Philosophy & Approach

Day in the Life

General School Mission

"The preschool years stand as a bridge between home and grade school. At Calvary Nursery School we choose not to hurry children across the bridge, but allow them to proceed at their own pace through the medium they enjoy most, joyful play. Children's inherent love of play, when nourished in a supportive environment is later transformed into enthusiasm for learning and still later into creative and insightful adult thinking. Significant play is a child's real work and the best possible preparation for life.
Because young children so deeply imitate and absorb their surroundings, at CNS special care is taken to create an environment that is beautiful, harmonious and secure. We follow the circle of the year through music, storytelling, watercolor, poetry, crafts, seasonal tasks and hikes around the village. We strive to develop within the child a love of life and a joy for learning. The children's imagination unfolds in play with simple, natural playthings and furnishings. Frequent forays outdoors will awaken the innate curiosity children have for nature. A respect for the environment will be fostered with hands-on discovery and appreciation for seasonal offerings from the landscape. A secure daily and weekly rhythm with caring, supportive adults will encourage children to flourish and grow strong and confident.

A Typical Day

Good Morning! We welcome our friends as they arrive amid quiet activities and classroom preparation.
Ring the Bell. School formally begins. The children either ring the bell in the church tower or go to the church doors and count the 9 rings.
One morning a week children have chapel time and another they have Music Together class
Morning Meeting. Children gather together for our traditional greeting song, our morning message and sharing time.
Explore! Play! Children choose from the variety of activities and experiences offered in the classroom including block building, puzzles and games, art experiences and dramatic play.
Clean Up/Snack Ceremony. Children help to clean up the classroom and set the tables for snack time with tablecloths, plates, cups and a candle. We share a blessing before we eat. We follow snack time with story time before we head outdoors.
Outdoor Play/Village Exploration. Children enjoy all that nature offers in our beautiful and serene play yard. Some days we journey into the local Borough community to visit and learn about the people who live and work around us.
Lunch Time. we eat our lunches we've brought from home.
Going Home A teacher greets parents in the hallway with stories of the day, children finish their lunches.
Day is done All the children have gone today and staff prepare the environment and review the day.
