Day in the Life

A Typical Day

Time Window Activity Description
9:00-9:30 AM/
2:15-12:45 PM Arrival/
Free Play Stations are set up around the classroom so children can play alone or in small groups at a variety of activities. These might include: a table with playdoh and cookie cutters; crayons and paper; the rice table filled with measuring cups, jars and funnels. Areas such as reading, dramatic play, manipulatives and music may also be open for children's use.

Circle Time Children gather and sit. Teachers and children interact, talking about the day's schedule, the daily theme, reading a book and/or playing a theme-related game.
9:50 - 10:30 AM/
1:05 - 1:45 PM Project Children are encouraged to participate in the art project of the day. Creative expression is encouraged.
Second Free Play Stations or learning centers are set up around the room as in First Free Play; with more choices available. A limited number of children may participate in each area, and children may continue projects they began earlier.
10:30 - 11:00 AM/
1:45 - 2:15 PM Clean Up Children are guided to help clean-up the classroom.
Show & Tell Each day, one child will have the opportunity to bring in something special from home. The child is encouraged to tell the group what the item is, where they got it and why it's special.
Wash Hands In an effort to keep germs to a minimum, children wash hands before Snack.
Snack Snack is provided on a rotating snack schedule by the parents. Healthy foods are required by the State Health Department.
11:00 - 11:30 AM/
2:15 - 2:45 PM Music/
Movement Children are taught songs and fingerplays. They may listen to a variety of music and move to the rhythm. Instruments are often used.
Outdoor Play Play equipment such as a climber, sand box, crawl tube, balls, etc. will be available. It is an opportunity for the children to use outside voices and release energy.
