Philosophy & Approach

Day in the Life

General School Mission

" The goals and activities in each classroom are designed to foster the development of expressive and receptive language, pre-reading, pre-wriitng and pre-math skills, as well as fine motor and gross motor skills. Our programs utilize a hands-on approach to learning through risk-taking and investigating in a safe and supportive environment. Individual differences, readiness levels and learning styles among our students are recognized and appreciated by our experienced faculty. Our curriculum is enriched through fields trips to places such as the New Canaan Nature Center for apple cider pressing and maple sugaring, the Bruce Museum at Thanksgiving time for a unit on Woodland Indian Family Life, trips to the Audubon and Fairchild Gardens, and SUNY Purchase to be introduced to the excitement of live theater. Of utmost importance, however, is the understanding that children learn best through play. And there is ample time for play at RHNS.

A Typical Day

"Free choice of an activitiy upon entering in the morning. Children may opt to spend time on the computer, building with unit blocks or at the Duplo block table, enjoying quiet activities such as puzzles, manipulatives and painting, or dramatic play. It is a time for socialization, and interaction with teachers.
A table activity. The children come together in small groups or as a class to participate in an activity (art, cooking, science and/or nature activities, etc.) which reinforces a unit of study.
"Specials". Three days per week, the children have the opportunity to leave their classrooms for thirty minute periods, to receive instruction from music and art specialists. In the music program, the children come to appreciate different styles of music while becoming comfortable performing before an audience. In the art program, the children have an opportunity to work with different media as they draw, mold, paint and sculpt. In addition to these three scheduled special subjects per week, we are visitied throughout the year by specialists in the fields of art, science, nature, music and theater.
Language Arts. There is time in each day for coming together as a class to listen to a story, explore the calendar and chart the weather, enjoy sharing during show and tell and begin to appreciate poetry.
Recess. Each class has a scheduled thiry minutes of outdoor play every day.
A snack is provided mid-morning.
