General Approach to Learning: Montessori

Day in the Life

General School Mission

"The Montessori method emphasizes the development of initiative and independence by allowing children to do by themselves the things that naturally interest them, within disciplined limits.
Montessori based her method on giving children freedom in a specially designed environment that provides the opportunity for the child to develop naturally by working with tangible materials.
Each child receives individual attention in order to develop basic capacities: his or her ability to control movement (motor development), to refine the senses (perceptual development), to think (cognitive development), to move with purpose (volitional development), and to feel and have emotions (affective and emotional development).
Maria Montessori believed that each child is born with a unique potential to be revealed, rather than as "blank slate" waiting to be written upon. Her vision was to create a program that enables children to become self-motivated learners, to be independent and responsible members of a community, and to grow into confident and balanced human beings."
