Philosophy & Approach

Day in the Life

General School Mission

"Our mission is to provide a safe, nurturing environment where students can develop an enthusiasm for life-long learning. We believe that all children have great potential. Our goal is to provide positive experiences that will enable students to reach their fullest potential.
The curriculum aims at academic excellence while allowing for different styles and rates of learning, Our staff members are highly trained and experienced. They have a wide range of skills and interests (art, music, science, sports, etc.) which they share with students and other teachers. Our teachers are enthusiastic about learning, willing to try new experiences
and flexible enough to work with other staff members. All staff members are nurturing and able to model positive values for our students. We believe in the core values of:
* Respecting ourselves and others
* Recognizing each person's indivduality.
* Building positive self esteem.
* Encouraging self-discipline and self-expression
We envision our school as a partnership between students, staff members and parents working together to provide the best possible education for all.

A Typical Day

"6:30 - 9:00 a.m. - Arrival Children who arrive early listen to stories and records. They may have free play as teachers set up classrooms. Children may bring breakfast on a daily basis (i.e. fruit, yogurt, a baggie of cereal). We'll provide the milk.
9:00 - 9:30 a.m. - Circle Time A group time for the development of listening and language skills through the use of stories, puppets, music, finger plays, and sharing of experiences.
9:30 - 10:15 a.m. - Classroom Work Time The room environment provides a variety of interest centers (math, science, reading readiness, art, language development, manipulatives, practical life and geography). This is an individual work time and the children are free to choose the interest centers they wish to work on. They are encouraged to make choices, solve problems, create and express themselves through the work and develop social skills.
10:15 - 10:45 a.m. - Snack/Outdoor Play Children are served a nutritious snack. After snack, opportunities are provided for the children to engage in activities that will develop large muscles and body control. Children often go on nature walks and care for school animals at this time.
10:45 - 11:10 a.m. - Circle Fun Spanish and a story are presented at this time. This period of the day strengthens the child's sense of group identity
11:10 - 11:40 a.m. - Classroom Work Time Children are once again encouraged to choose the interest center they wish to work on.
11:40 - 12:00 p.m. - Lunch Lunch
12:00 - 12:40 p.m. - Outdoor Play Water play, painting, props for dramatic play and books are available.
12:40 - 3:00 p.m. - Rest Time This is a very necessary part of our day. It provides a change of pace and relaxation after a very active morning. Children who are sleeping will not be disturbed and will sleep until 3:00 p.m.
3:00 - 6:00 p.m. - Indoor/Outdoor Activities Children will work inside and out. During this period we work with those children who the morning teachers feel need follow up work in different areas. Children are provided with cooking, art and cognitive experience in the afternoon.
