Philosophy & Approach

School Philosophy

General Approach to Learning: Montessori

From the Director:

The theory behind Montessori education is simple. Children want to learn. From three to six years of age, the child passes through sensitive periods, revealing surprising mental agility and an intense interest in the adult world. The child loves to learn new words, and is interested in orderliness and good manners—not as a game, but as a representation of the adult world toward which he or she is moving. These sensitive periods come from a God given need to acquire and master skills that are especially necessary in development. If not allowed to follow this natural curiosity and need to know, the child loses interest in exploring and discovering his or her environment. The Seedsowers Montessori environment is a community in which children live and work cooperatively. The “Prepared Environment”, from scaled furniture and cleaning utensils to special Montessori apparatus, is essential to a Montessori education. This special environment offers a means (time, place, and circumstance) by which the child can develop to his or her potential according to individual needs, based upon Dr. Montessori’s observations and recommendations for all children.

Quality of Teaching

Individualized Teaching: From the Director

The main goal of Seedsowers Montessori is to provide a stimulating, child oriented environment that children can explore, touch, and learn without fear. An understanding teacher is a large part of this child's world. The teachers, through careful observation, takes to heart the needs, talents, gifts, and special individuality of each child. It is a process that helps children learn in their own way at their own pace.

Home-School Connection

Home-School Connection: From the Director

We look forward to building rapport with each parent to benefit the child at home and at school. We enjoy informal conversations with you to share news about your child. Activity Reports are sent home once in the fall and once in the spring as comprehensive evaluations of each child’s progress throughout the year. On a more formal basis, we can meet (at parent’s request) for a conference to discuss all aspects of your child’s progress.

Separation

Separation is Handled through:

  • Pre-entry meetings with parents at school

Handling Separation: From the Director

Here are some tips we follow for making transitioning into school easier:

Try not to remove your child from the playground/classroom if he/she is upset. It makes it that much harder to bring him back in. We will be right by your side offering help and assistance.

It is best not to ask your child if it’s OK for you to leave and don’t make promises like, “If you stay here at preschool, I’ll buy you some ice cream when I pick you up.” This can reinforce the behavior if she keeps getting what she wants.

If your child does well on the first day, be prepared, you aren’t out of the woods just yet. Some children waltz right into preschool as happy as can be and everyone is content. But then, out of nowhere, a few weeks into the school year, your child may start to cry when you leave. This too is very common. Basically the novelty of school has worn off and your child realizes that she isn’t with you. This too shall pass.

Be confident in knowing that we are here to help you in any way!
