Philosophy & Approach

School Philosophy

General Approach to Learning: Teacher-Led

From the Director:

We are organized rather than structured. We believe there must be a sound, developmentally based curriculum which provides the 'thread' that ties all activities together. Within this framework there must also be opportunities for children to learn through their own exploration and ingenuity. Therefore, our morning is a combination of child directed and teacher directed activities.

Quality of Teaching

Individualized Teaching: From the Director

Curriculum is open-ended, allowing the teacher to meet the needs of both extremes. New concepts are presented as a whole group but then move to station activities allowing the teacher to work one on one with each individual child.

Day in the Life

General School Mission

Educated Entertainment best describes Alphabet Soup. We are academically based yet always developmentally appropriate. Children learn through songs, games and manipulative materials. Self esteem, confidence and independence are our primary goals for children.

A Typical Day

Each day begins with about 15 minutes of music, movement and story allowing children to settle in.

We then break into three developmentally appropriate groups for the remainder of the morning.

Circle time is followed by craft and center or station time.

Snack is around 10:30, followed by number stations and outside play.

Pick-up is at 11:40 outside.

Home-School Connection

Home-School Connection: From the Director

Because we are a small school, parents and teachers talk daily. Conferences will be set up as needed or requested by either teacher or parent.

Parents Say They are Encouraged to:

  • Hold social events at the school to build community
  • Are able to visit the school anytime we want
  • Go on field trips
  • Volunteer in the classroom
  • Receive newsletters

Modes of Communication

  • Notes
  • Phone Calls
  • Voice Mail
  • Email
  • Special Meetings
  • Two or More Regular Conferences
  • Drop-Off
  • Pick-Up
  • Regular newsletter/printed updates circulated to the whole school

Separation is Handled through:

  • Pre-entry meetings with parents at school
  • Extra staff dedicated to handle separation
  • Abbreviated schedule at start of school year

Handling Separation: From the Director

Orientation for parents and child occurs on Wednesday, before school starts.

Children and parents participate in both indoor and outdoor activities. Policies are reviewed and all paper work, tuition, change of clothes, etc is collected making sure the child becomes the priority the following day.

We begin school on Thursday and Friday with a field day: exciting activities set up to capture the child's interest. There is always extra staff on hand.

We find that if the parent has done their homework and chosen their school carefully the separation is fairly easy and we seldom have (parent) tears!

Parents are welcome to call during the morning for reassurance!
