School Philosophy

General Approach to Learning: Play-Based

From the Director:

We believe that children learn best through their own inquiry and exploration, that is, freedom of choice from developmentally appropriate, pedagogically sound learning apparatus within a prepared Montessori environment. In our environment, the guide, or teacher, is the dynamic link between the child and the environment, kindling the flame of interest within the child and then withdrawing to allow the child to focus, concentrate on his or her own.

Other subjects taught Along with all of the Montessori curriculum areas,including peace education, we also include spanish and chinese in our program for 3-6 year olds and spanish in oour programs for 6-15 year olds.

From the Director:

As a Montessori environment, we include as many areas of the world as possible within our environment, scaled to the developmental abilities of the children within our prepared environments. The children are then free to explore these environments and chose those activities that they are drawn to. Guides (teachers) provide individual guidance and assistance when necessary.

Day in the Life

General School Mission

One World Montessori, a non-profit corporation, was founded to provide highest quality Montessori education, child care and parent education to the families of silicon valley, and have been doing so since 1979. Currently we are able to provide these services to families with children aged 1-15. We also provide Montessori Teacher Training as well

A Typical Day

Children can begin arriving at school as early as 7:30 am.

They may bring their breakfast with them if they are hurried and may begin their day by finishing breakfast at the snack table, after being greated by their teacher and saying goodbye to their parent. As others arrive, the children are free to choose from the work on the shelves, or to help the teachers prepare the classroom, water the flowers or feed the animals.

By 8:30 am the classroom is prepared and the children my contiue to choose work inside or play or work outside.

At 9 am, the school day begins, and the children come in to be greeted one by one, hand up their coals and choose their first activity of the day. A 3 year old might choose to do the pink tower, then perhaps a food preparation or polishing activity, perhaps then go to the snack table for snack. Then she might decide to go to an I spy lesson, draw a picture, or do some painting. Perhaps she and a friend would build a maze with the red rods, or work with classified matching cards.

At 11 am, the circle song is played and she would choose if she wanted to keep working or attend circle. If she came to circle, she would participate in role, calendar, music and movement activities, vocabulary building, self expression and role play opportunities, as well as learning self control and wating her turn to speak. Songs and fingerplays as well as counting and calendar occur in three languages. She would also observe a teacher present a group lesson.

At noon, she would either go home, or have lunch at school, setting her place with glass, plate napkin and utensils before eating, and then cleaning up aftewards. Then she would go outside to play, or get ready for her nap.

At 1:30 pm, if she was not sleeping, she would participate in afternoon lesssons and work time, similar to her experiences during the morning, although small group lessons in both spanish and chinese are also available for her to choose to participate in.

Home-School Connection: From the Director

We have a monthly newsletter, several parent information meetings where we discuss Montessori practices and philosophy, mandatory parent conferences with complete forms for tracking progress in all areas over the entire 3-4 year Primary cycle. We encourage parents to keep their children in Montessori environments.

Handling Separation: From the Director

Transition from home to school is handled through repeated visits prior to starting school by the children and their parents to help the child become familiar with the environment and adults, parent interviews and questionaires which help teachers become acquained with children and their parent's perspectives.

Parents remaining with the child when necessary.

Transitions to Montessori Elementary are handled with repeated visits prior to entrance into the class, transitions to other schools are handled according to their policies, although we meet with the parents to help them understand the differences between what their child is used to and what they will be experiencing in the future, to help them assist their child in the transition.
