Philosophy & Approach

School Philosophy

General Approach to Learning: Play-Based

From the Director:

These are the years when learning should be both fun and full of discovery. We provide opportunities that encourage exploration and problem solving in a safe, nurturing environment. We build a sound academic, social and emotional foundation for future learning and achievement. Our preschool teachers guide children through an array of planned activities, free play and structured learning experiences. These include preparation for reading and math, and beginning Spanish and a wellness program. All these elements are presented in fun and exciting ways that help children grow successfully and happily. Substantive research supports the long-lasting advantages of early curriculum-based education. We cultivate an eagerness to learn by providing a myriad of opportunities for your child to develop intellectually, gain confidence, and strive for physical as well as emotional well-being. We purposely keep our classes small and conduct our programs within a safe, nurturing, and creative environment. We recognize that a multi-sensory, integrated curriculum is remarkably effective in teaching children new concepts and skills. Extracted from

Quality of Teaching

Individualized Teaching: From the Director

We know that your child is unique and learns in his or her own way. Acknowledging different learning styles is one way that we focus on your child's individual needs. We recognize that some children are especially good auditory learners, while others are visual and need to see pictures as well as draw them. We also understand that some children are tactile learners who need a more hands-on approach.

Merryhill School recognizes that your child needs support, encouragement, and personalized attention. Our individualized program is best suited to developing his or her skills and strengths, while addressing opportunities for growth.

We keep classes small so that our teachers can pick up on your child's personality, preferences, and learning style, and tailor instruction according to his or her unique needs.

A Typical Day

We balance playtime with structured learning experiences that include preparation for reading and math, beginning Spanish, computers and a wellness program. Our preschool provides a safe, nurturing environment, and our caring teachers are dedicated to creating lifelong learners. Our Links to Learning Curriculum is an integrated series of programs that take advantage of a child's readiness to learn through fun, challenging and meaningful activities. We link parents to their child's classroom experiences by providing a monthly summary of their child's work and suggestions to continue the learning at home. It's part of a communication progress that keeps parents truly involved.
