Philosophy & Approach

School Philosophy

General Approach to Learning: Co-op

From the Director:

"We believe that nursery school should provide children with a supportive environment in which to explore who they are and their relationships with others during play. At Miraloma, children have an opportunity to make choices about what, where, and with whom to play within an extended time period. This allows them to learn about the consequences of those choices, and to experience success in creating and determining their own play. Building a positive self-image and positive social relationships are the main goals of our programs. With the self-confidence and interpersonal skills acquired at Miraloma, children are ready and able to meet the academic and social challenges that lie ahead." Extracted from the preschool's website

Curriculum & Teaching Approach

From the Director:

"Our families are involved in every aspect of operating the school. To ensure the success of our programs, every member family must: perform a school job using their skills and interests (such as enrollment, fundraising, newsletter, maintenance, curriculum, etc.); attend the monthly membership meeting; provide snack for their child's program once a month; be available to substitute teach once a month, if called in an emergency ('last call'); complete maintenance and housekeeping duties; participate in fundraising efforts. We rely on a strong foundation of parent teachers. Unlike many co-ops, Miraloma doesn't require all parents to teach weekly, but there are many benefits to being a Parent Teacher. Working closely with our trained teaching staff, Parent Teachers enhance their ability to interpret child behavior and to influence it constructively. They also grow more objective about their own child's development by observing and understanding many children." Extracted from the preschool's website

Day in the Life

General School Mission

"Miraloma Cooperative Nursery School provides developmentally appropriate, child-centered morning and afternoon programs in a loving and safe environment. At our little red schoolhouse, children and families cultivate a lifelong love of learning as they develop new skills, knowledge, and friendships. We value the diversity of our member families, whose strengths and talents enrich our programs. Community participation and parent education nourish our family-oriented atmosphere."
