"The Montessori method of learning is based on the insights of Dr. Maria Montessori, who was the first female physician in Italy. Born in 1870, she used her background in science to observe the development of children from birth through adolescence.
The "method" that Dr. Montessori developed is an approach that reflects her deep respect for the uniqueness of each child. With thousands of Montessori schools on six continents throughout the world, Maria Montessori revolutionized the way we educate children.
Our classrooms have 3 common goals for all students:
We want children to learn for the joy of it - not to please adults. Our mission is to spark the natural curiosity within each individual child, creating excited, independent learners.
* Feeling of Community
Our students express themselves politely and confidently with excellent interpersonal skills. We assist and teach them to solve problems and conflicts, so that eventually they can do so without the help of adults.
Children want and need to experience the world on their own. We give them the necessary tools, guidance and opportunities to develop independence and self-reliance in a supportive, caring environment.
Dr. Montessori failed to trademark her name before she died. Therefore, anyone can open a "Montessori" school without the requisite training, education or experience. The vast majority of Montessori schools in existence are not true to the method.
Two primary governing bodies exist for Montessori education: The Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) and the American Montessori Society (AMS). Bergamo only employs AMI or AMS trained teachers and is fully affiliated with the American Montessori Society."
