"Introduction to Our Philosophy

The term, discipline, is often used to describe the way in which children are encouraged to follow sensible rules for getting along with others, and to acknowledge the proper authority of adults. However, our beliefs about children are based on the recognition that they can participate meaningfully, at age appropriate levels, in setting standards for getting along with others and in acknowledging adults' authority. In other words, we believe that discipline is an idea that can be misused unless it is child-centered, and unless it is ALSO seen as a way to consistently acknowledge children for their attempts and accomplishments, and yes, for just being themselves, too!

Therefore, our philosophy is best described as child guidance, rather than discipline. Each of the ideas we use to build our associations with children, their parents and teachers, each other, and with others in the community is based on the premise that we ALL have something valuable to contribute and that we all deserve the opportunity to participate in setting the conditions in which we learn, live, and work.

In Montessori terms, our prepared classroom provides an array of chores that are so fulfilling to children that they have no need for challenging each other or engaging in conflict
