The Village School offers a 'Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program. TK students are the youngest at the Village School. At the start of the year the students range in age from 4 1/2 to 5. The TK year is one of growth, exploration, discovery, and new beginnings. There are three main differences between Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten (K). First, the children in the two grades are at different levels of social maturity, and the skills development work undertaken reflects this. Second, children in K are expected to have longer attention spans and greater ability to concentrate. Third, TK places more emphasis on one-to-one attention, while group work is more prominent in K. However, a principle common to both grades is that each child will be extended and encouraged academically according to individual needs, abilities and readiness.' -- Extracted from the Village School website

A Typical Day

'Below is the schedule for a typical TK week. The main blocks of time are in the morning from 8:00 - 11:00. This is our main 'academic' time. We start the day with circle time, calendar, and then a short group lesson. The rest of the morning children are working in centers completing their morning must do's. They have four must do's each day - one math, one language, one art/cooking/fine motor, and one games/puzzles/blocks. The must do's are integrated around our current theme and the letter of the alphabet that we are working on. Our week is integrated and balanced so the children spend time each week in math, language, science, social studies, art, music, Spanish, social play, P.E., library, technology, fine motor practice, and exploration.' -- Extracted from the Village School website
