General Approach to Learning: Montessori

Day in the Life

General School Mission

"Our school is dedicated to a nonsectarian Montessori education for children, regardless of race, color, sex, or creed. The Montessori method is based on the premise of Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician and educator who believed that each child is born with a drive to develop themselves. A child learns best from his own physical activity and use of the five senses in an enriched environment which offers the freedom to discover, explore, and create with supportive encouragement. Unlike many theorists, she believed the methods should be open-ended and encourage innovation and growth based on new observations of the child. Children are taught to work independently and will progress at their own pace.
Dr. Montessori's ideas have been supported and expanded by the scientific research of Jean Piaget, Jerome Bruner, and other developmental psychologists. Consider learning more about the method by reading the following books: The Montessori Method, The Secret of Childhood, or The Absorbent Mind.
